Cluster configuration
Typical cluster configurations typically include a shared disk subsystem connected to all servers in the cluster. The shared disk subsystem can be connected using high-speed cards, cables, and Fiber Channel…

Transistor Evolution and Processor Revolution

The microprocessor manufacturing process is inextricably linked with the evolution and continuous improvement of the transistor. The transistor, invented in 1948 in the laboratories of Bell Corporation, made it possible to create a computer from small-sized electronic circuits created on printed circuit boards. The revolutionary role of the transistor is in its small size. Continue reading

The victory of the losers, or the story of the creation of FLASH memory (part2)

This type of memory was made in the form of a two-dimensional matrix of conductors, at the intersection of which a thin jumper (20-30 μm) was created from metal or amorphous silicon. The programming of the microcircuits consisted of passing a large current pulse through an appropriate jumper that caused it to melt (burst). The likelihood of recovering torn jumpers was minimal. For greater reliability and eliminating the possibility of restoration of jumpers, the chip was subjected to thermal training (additional heating for a long time), and then it was checked and, if necessary, reprogrammed. Intel forecasts (optimistic)
To solve the problem of reducing the size of transistors and conductive tracks, Intel created a whole working group called Technology & Manufacturing Group (TMG), which has about 4,000 employees.…

"Bucket" Compression
An old army joke about a compression bucket that the "experienced" senior comrades are instructed to bring to a young soldier, checking his quick wits, is more relevant than ever…

The victory of the losers, or the story of the creation of FLASH memory (part3)
We were very happy and proud; you know, young engineers with their own hands were able to make the first “flip” chip. After some discussion between Gordon and Andy, Gordon…
